The Challenge

Rural women and children are often the most vulnerable to climate change-related risks. Overreliance on the low-paying jobs in the climate-sensitive agriculture sector, and traditional sources of energy, compound health risks and lack of financial independence for women.
Furthermore, women have to undertake long distances of unsafe travel to urban areas to access health, livelihood, or educational facilities. The lack of any safe and reliable means of transportation poses a continued threat to their safety and wellbeing.

The Solution

The EV Rickshaw Mechanic Training Program is exclusively focused on equipping rural women with skills in the maintenance and repair of electric rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks). This initiative fosters technical expertise in local women and assists them to emerge as a reliable means of safe and sustainable transportation that connects their communities to urban areas. Thus, the program enables them to earn sustainable livelihood and gain financial independence.

The program also includes a valuable entrepreneurship training component, that inspires and supports women to start their own green micro-enterprises, thereby building meaningful livelihoods and expanding India’s growing green economy.
