The Challenge

Rural India has some of the most startling rates of anemia in the world, with over 58% of women and 68% of children suffering from anemic symptoms. Furthermore, the condition remains largely undetectable due to the lack of healthcare access in rural areas, reliance on basic capillary blood tests, and lack of routine screening and awareness about symptoms of anemia.

The Solution

The Desai Foundation’s Anemia Awareness & Screening Camps partners with local urban hospitals, clinics, and doctors to bring state of the art hemoglobin testing directly to rural areas. This helps in detecting anemia and starting treatment early, especially for vulnerable populations such as women, pregnant women, and children. Furthermore, the program provides iron supplements to help offset iron deficiencies, and provides referrals to hospitals on a case-by-case basis.

The program also conducts educational awareness sessions that cover topics such as nutrition, symptoms, and treatment for anemia or anemic symptoms.

The Lasting Impact

By building community awareness about anemia, and ensuring timely and accessible diagnostic testing, we are helping communities to take control of their health, combat fatigue, and lead healthier and dignified lives.
